seeds
It all starts with the seed.

The crop input tied most closely to yield is seed. Seed is also the most expensive crop input, so proper seed selection becomes the most important decision a producer makes. That’s the philosophy behind the mission of our seed department. Carry the right products and have local information available to make the right decisions. We utilize a four brand strategy to ensure our customers have access to the best products available. We sell Croplan, NK Brand, Brevant, Dekalb and Asgrow brands of seed. Ultimately, our strategy involves evaluating seed products in a test plot format and then moving them to the field where we continue to evaluate products.
Since our trade territory is so immersed with livestock production, particularly dairy and beef, our focus is also on seed for forage production. Each fall we do corn silage test plots, where corn hybrids are looked at exclusively for silage. We evaluate tonnage, digestibility, DM tons and other quality aspects of hybrids, not just grain yield.
For corn we have 80,000 kernel count bags available or we can get the seed in boxes which contain 45-50 units. The boxes help maximize productivity with larger planters when many acres are covered.
We offer a way to avoid handling soybean bags and still get the best seed in the industry. We have Bulk Seed available in four bins that hold 2000 units each. All our brands of soybeans are sold by seed count (140,000 per bag) so you know exactly what you are buying. You can drive into town with your wagon or tender to pick up seed, or we provide seed delivery right out to the field using our seed tender. The advantages to bulk seed include:
- You don’t have to handle or deal with soybean bags
- You can get bulk seed in any quantity, not just 50 unit increments
- You can treat your bulk seed with a seed treatment.
Our commitment to the right seed product on the acre shows.

Custom Application
We take pride in doing a quality job of application, the first time. We have up to date equipment with variable rate technology and experienced operators who take pride in their work. We believe timing of application is very important, so we have the equipment and manpower to get the job done when it needs to be done.

Fertilizer
We offer fertilizer as dry blends or liquid fertilizer. We have application equipment to custom apply for VRT or straight blends, or you can choose to apply your own with our fertilizer buggies. To maximize your return on investment of fertilizer, you should always soil test before applying any P & K fertilizer. We offer grid sampling in either 2.5 or 10 acre blocks. Our recommendations are based on university research that points to critical soil test levels for optimum yields. We will discuss each field with you and help maximize each dollar spent to get the greatest return on investment.

We use data from grid sample mapping on your fields to come up with the right fertilizer plan for each field.

Our machines use variable rate technology to apply the right fertilizer at the right rate on each acre.

Manure Management
To fall under manure management planning regulations in the state of Iowa, you must be considered a Confined Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO). A CAFO is any operation more than 500 animal units totally confined under roof. Animal Unit (AU) is the way the DNR defines the size of an operation. Below is a listing by species of the size when one operation is considered a CAFO. Remember all these animals must be in total confinement, and animal units are calculated based on the maximum capacity of the unit. Any animal that gets outside into a yard is not included.
- Finishing Swine: more than 1250 head (0.4 AU)
- Nursery Swine: more than 5000 head (0.1 AU)
- Dairy Cows: more than 357 head (1.4 AU)
- Poultry: more than 50,000 head (0.01 AU)
- Beef: more than 500 head (1.0 AU)
If your current operation or planned expansion of an operation exceeds these numbers you will need to file a Manure Management Plan. Large operations over 1000 AU (twice the numbers listed above) have special regulations pertaining to them. Along with having a MMP, if you plan to apply your own manure, you will need to get a confinement manure applicator’s license to haul your manure. Testing and certification for this license is done through the extension service.
In addition to the required manure planning, it’s a good idea to test your manure for nutrient value. Once you have a manure test, we can recommend specific rates/acre of manure to maximize your manure’s nutrient value to the crop.
Current phosphorus based rules also mandate that soil tests be taken from each field in the plan every 4 years. We can do the necessary soil testing for you and incorporate the results right into your MMP. Current rules state that a soil test must be taken at a minimum of every 10 acres. Grid Mapping your field also fulfills this requirement.
We can assist in developing and maintaining MMP’s for your operation. Please contact Peter Westra at 712.470.0994. For more information you can also check out the Iowa DNR Animal Feeding Operations website or the Iowa Manure Management Action Group website.

Grid Sampling
An important part of any intensive nutrient management program is a good soil test. The first step is to obtain quality soil samples. We continue to do our own soil testing to insure that producers receive quality results as quickly as possible. Our recommended grid size is 2.5 acres, but we can do either smaller or larger grids. We test for Soil pH, Buffer pH, Phosphorous, Potassium, and Organic Matter. We can test for micronutrients as well. By grid sampling, we can make recommendations allocating resources to where they are needed most so you can get the best return on your fertilizer dollar.
We also offer tissue testing while the crop is the field. It is basically a picture of how the crop is doing throughout the growing season. Tissue testing allows us to see what deficiencies are in the plant at that time and correct them with micronutrients. This helps to maximize your yield for a minimal investment.

Crop Protection
Weed control is important to ensure your crop utilizes every drop of moisture and every pound of nutrient available out in the field. We offer a full line of crop protection products with a knowledge base on how to use them. Stop by and we can talk about which products to use on your farm to reduce costs and maximize yield.
